Kauai Waste Disposal Improvements ($9,000,000)

The requested funding would be used to assist the County of Kauai in expanding its only sanitary landfill.

Phase II of the Kekaha Landfill is the only permitted sanitary (RCRA Subtitle D) landfill on the island of Kauai, serving the solid waste disposal needs for the entire population of 68,000 residents and 23,000 daily visitors. The  project’s main development features include construction of a new 3.6 million gallon leachate evaporation pond; construction of the base liner and leachate collection system for Cell 1 of the expansion; reconfiguration of leachate piping, installation of a leachate flowmeter and tie-ins to existing force-main lines to redirect all leachate to the new evaporation pond; and demolition of the existing leachate pond.
