Wailuku-Alenaio Watershed, island of Hawaii ($250,000)
The requested funding would be used to reduce the risk of damage due to flooding in the city of Hilo.
The project was authorized in 1976 and is sponsored by the County of Hawaii, Department of Public Works.
The Wailuku-Alenaio Watershed project will reduce the risk of damage due to flooding in the city of Hilo. The goal of this project is to protect the northern part of Hilo against the 1 percent (100 year) flood. Three major elements of the project were constructed between 1979 and 1983. These measures have prevented flood damage as planned; however, additional elements are needed to provide full coverage. Construction of flood control structures along Kaumana Drive between Wilder Road and Chong’s Bridge are needed. Revision of the Watershed Plan was requested by the sponsors following a major flood in November 2000. A Supplemental Watershed Plan and Environmental Impact Statement is in the process of being prepared and will be followed by design and construction of the final phase of this flood prevention project.
