Appropriations Request

Coalition for a Drug-Free Lanai ($25,000)

The Coalition for a Drug-Free Lanai will use the funds to support its Youth Mentoring Program, an evidence-based program to prevent or decrease the use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs by at-risk youth on the island of Lanai.

Approximately 600 Lanai youth will be served over a one-year period by the Youth Mentoring Program in an effort to (1) assist at-risk youth in receiving support and guidance from a mentor; (2) improve the academic performance of youth; (3) reduce the youth dropout rate; (4) reduce juvenile delinquency and involvement of gangs by youth; and (5) reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs by youth.

According to a recent University of Hawaii School of Social Work study, Native Hawaiian youths, who make up a large percentage of the population on the island, report the highest rate of substance use in Hawaii.  Survey results indicated that the average ages of onset claimed in 2008 were 12.4 for alcohol, 11.8 for tobacco, and 13 for marijuana.

CDFL partners for the Youth Mentoring Program include Castle & Cooke Resorts, County of Maui, Halau Hula O Kaula, Kamehameha Schools Extension Education, Lanai Arts Program, Lanai Counseling, Lanai Elementary and High School, Maui County Police Department, Lanai Senior Citizens Center, Maui Family Support Services Inc., Maui Youth and Family Services, Menehune Basketball League, Pacific Media Productions, The Lanai Youth Center, Trilogy Excursions, Alu Like Inc., and seven faith-based organizations.
