Human Rights Alliance - Center for Comprehensive Justice ($500,000)
This project, led by the Hawaii Immigrant Justice Center, would provide comprehensive legal, medical and psychological care, and social services to Hawaii's newcomers.
Due to its geographic location, Hawaii serves as a gateway to the U.S. for many immigrants from Asia and the Pacific. Hawaii has the sixh largest immigrant population per capita in the country, and nearly one in five residents are immigrants.
While many come to the U.S. hoping to achieve the American dream, some immigrants have experienced a loss of their human rights. In 2009, about two-thirds of recent immigrants who received legal services from the Hawaii Immigrant Justice Center were victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, or sexual assault.
