Pacific Island Land Ocean Typhoon Experiment Program ($1,000,000)
The requested funding would be used for the Pacific Island Land Ocean Typhoon (PILOT) Experiment Program.
Funds will be used to continue data collection at the Hawaii Test Site at Mokuleia on the island of Oahu and in Ipan, Guam, in conjunction with the University of Hawaii. Studies are continuing under the Coastal Field Data Collection Program.
This continued data collection effort will lead to further understanding of wave run-up and transformation over island reef environments. These advances in the science and engineering of the wave-reef interactions during hurricane/typhoon conditions will provide for better island inundation predictions to be used for improved emergency planning and management procedures for the State of Hawaii as part of the Corps’ ongoing Hurricane Evacuation Studies. In addition, the study of low-level wind data during cyclones will define the wind field over islands and surrounding ocean area. These data will be used in the verification and calibration of existing numerical models and will also be used in the development of the next generation predictive coastal models under cyclone conditions. The State of Hawaii Office of Civil Defense is a strong supporter of this effort.
Recipient: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

Why this is a good use of taxpayer dollars: Continued data collection efforts will provide for better island inundation predictions to be used for improved emergency planning and management procedures for the State of Hawaii.
