Waimanalo Wastewater Reuse Plan ($67,000)
The requested funding would be used to complete the Waimanalo Wastewater Reuse Plan initiated in FY2009.
The City and County of Honolulu Department of Environmental Services, which serves as the local sponsor for this study, currently operates nine wastewater treatment plants, including the Waimanalo Wastewater Treatment Plant. The State Department of Land and Natural Resources owns the Waimanalo Wastewater Treatment Plant and is currently upgrading the facility, including installation of current wastewater treatment processes and an increase in treatment capacity. Treated wastewater is now discharged into an injection well system. Agriculture remains an important activity in Waimanalo; therefore the City wishes to study the potential of effluent reuse options. The study will include an inventory of the various irrigation demands (location, quality, and quantity) and will propose associated facility, treatment, conveyance, and required upgrades to address those demands. The study will also address the current availability of other sources of irrigation water and define the current regulatory requirements governing effluent reuse.
