Saddle Road Improvements, Mile Markers 48 to 54 - Island of Hawaii ($2,400,000)
The project will provide for redesign and construction to improve the existing Saddle Road between mile markers 48 and 54.
Saddle Road is the primary and only access from west Hawaii to the Department of Defense, Pohakuloa Training Area (Army). This road is used by military vehicles/convoys from the Kawaihae Harbor to Pohakuloa. The road is also used by commuters, tourists, and employees of the observatories on Mauna Kea volcano. The Saddle Road in its total length is the only cross island aterial road. At present the section of the road between mile markers 48 and 54 is in very bad condition. It is badly worn on both sides and riddled with potholes. The total estimated cost of the project is $3,000,000.
